Importance of Visualization in Manufacturing Facilities

In that post, I mention touring the Porsche facility in Germany, where we learned that they will custom color match a car to your favorite nail polish. They emphasize that color options are so important that they have a team dedicated to finding your perfect color. 

Not only is this the case in cars, but in everyday manufacturing equipment. In fact, there is a book dedicated to this topic called The Color Revolution (MIT Press). In it, the author states that “plant managers found that repainting the plain black machinery in bright, pleasant enamels reduced eyestrain, restlessness, and errors at the workbench. They also began to use color-coded paint systems as an aid to factory safety.”

Colors can make all the difference in any type of factory or facility. Our parent company OMT-Veyhl is a great example of this. During the design phase and layout of their 200,000 square foot facility, OMT-Veyhl manufacturing engineers focused on blue and orange assembly tables to correspond with their brand image which creates a visual and lean facility. Along with their brand colors, they also employ a color coding system for material handling and various other processes within their facility.

Another great example of visualization is a StockX facility. Within their distribution center, not only is everything in their facility black and green like their branded image, their logo is everywhere, and their assembly tables are no exception. While this gives them an incredible space to work in, it also creates an exceptional facility that is completely branded to them, allowing them to host tours and events in their facilities.
